Sunrise in the Post-Historic
World
The sun rises.
The sun rises
and long-legged muscular ungulates with silvery necks
nuzzle each other in the grass.
The sun rises
and rocks soak up the warmth.
The shells of soft eggs
split and veins of yolk
spread across the ground.
Where are all the humans?
They are pinned to the sky
like insect specimens, their eyes
stuck shut with ice crystals.
The sun rises
and every day the animals study the humans
behind the giant plate of glass that keeps them
from tumbling to the earth again.
They study the humans but do not record
any conclusions.
So the sun rises
and every day we have a new chance
to be beautiful.
